Kachechete villagers build own dam

New Ziana > Indonsakusa > Kachechete villagers build own dam

Villagers of Kachechete village, under Chief Mvuthu have taken matters into their own hands and
begun constructing a dam which will supply them with water for their household needs as well as
their livestock in this water starved community.
Kachechete village is on the eastern side of Hwange and is prone to harsh climatic conditions with
low rainfall.
The construction of the dam is being funded by UN Aid through the Amalima Loko organisation. The
15 X 8 dam wall is expected to serve more than 1 000 cattle, 800 goats,500 Donkeys and the
community at large.
Standard Weza, the Chairperson of the Dam Project, told Indonsakusa that the construction of the dam
is a dream coming to reality from the community of Kachechete.
We are so excited. It has always been our dream to have a dam but we did not have the capabilities
of constructing one. When Amalima Loko came with this project, it was manna from heaven as they
give us everything. As a community we are just here to provide labour,” said Weza
The Dam is expected to be complete by the end of October in time to capture rain water.
“We have so many plans, we want to put fish inside this Dam and we will have so many gardens
around it, especially for vegetables,” added Weza.

There are 189 people at the site helping to construct the dame, all from Kachechete and catchment
areas like Vulindlela and Chisuma. The workmanship at the site has two shifts with the first starting at
7am and ending at 11am. The second shift starts at 11am and ends at 3pm.
Amalima Loko is a five-year (2020-2025) USAID-funded Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance
programme designed to improve food security in Zimbabwe through increased food access and
sustainable watershed management.
Implemented by Cultivating New Frontiers in Agriculture (CNFA), Amalima Loko builds on the
legacy of its predecessor Amalima, a seven-year Resilience Food Security Activity also implemented
by CNFA that worked to sustainably improve food security and nutrition for vulnerable Zimbabwean
households.
