The chicken steel cage was allegedly illegally connected to electricity.

Illegal electricity connections are widespread, especially in high density areas, and some of these have led to properties burning down because of faulty workmanship.

Apart from illegal connections to power sources, the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority, also suffer serious vandalism of its equipment, especially be thieves looking for copper wires from its cables.

It has said it was losing millions every month due to vandalism.
