Mutare (New Ziana) – A 42 year old man from Dangamvura high density suburb who bashed his tenant for paying rent using Ecocash and has been on the run since 2017 was recently nabbed and hauled before the Mutare magistrates for initial remand.

Mutare magistrate Tendai Manhibi remanded Brighton Chipinge in custody saying he was a flight risk since he had been evading arrest for the three years.

Chipinge was charged with assault and theft after he allegedly took some goods from his tenant`s room without her consent.

He pleaded guilty to the assault charge but denied that he stole goods from his tenant, claiming that she was trying to fix him for assaulting her.

Prosecutor Perservence Masuku told the court that on July 12, 2017 in Dangamvura, Chipinge assaulted Evelin Mukahlera with his hands all over her body after he demanded that she pays rent in cash and not through Ecocash.

The court further heard that Chipinge unlawfully entered Mukahlera’s room and took 20 kg mealie meal, 4 litres cooking oil, 3 bars of soap without her consent.
