Malaysian PM sends special postcard to UN secretary general on Palestine

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and members of his Cabinet on Wednesday signed a special postcard addressed to United Nations secretary-general Antonio Guterres urging the world to accept Israel as a member state.

In a Facebook post, Anwar said the special postcard was also demanding that violence and cruelty against the Palestinian people by the Zionist regime be stopped immediately.

“This special postcard will be submitted through Malaysia’s Permanent Representative to the UN. I hope this sincere voice of Malaysians gets serious attention from Guterres,” he said.

Anwar also invited Malaysians to participate in the campaign to send special postcards to Guterres by purchasing the postcards starting on Thursday.

In a statement Wednesday, the Malaysian Ministry of Communications said Anwar and his Ministers signed the postcard, with the message “We appeal for the UN to accept the State of Palestine as a full member. Ceasefire now!” before the Cabinet meeting.

Meanwhile, in a separate post on the same page, Anwar reaffirmed his country’s support for the action by South Africa to take Israel to the International Court of Justice for committing genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Anwar said the whole world and rational individuals should support the courageous action by South Africa, adding that Israel should be held accountable, and its brutality stopped using available means.

“Western countries seem to want to continue turning a blind eye and take a neutral stance rather than dragging Israel to face the appropriate judicial scrutiny,” he said.

“The ‘human rights’ mantra often hurled towards countries that do not align with them, is now no longer heard.’

Anwar said the current wave of opposition against Israel is the largest seen since the massive protests against the Vietnam War and the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan.

He said the world has witnessed 100 days of relentless massacres ruthlessly committed by the Israel regime against Palestinian civilians since October 7 last year, which is a continuation of more than seven decades of injustice, clearly manifested through the attitudes and policies of the regime.

“The statements and right-wing racist views hurled by Zionist leaders towards Palestinians further illustrate the extremist stance of Zionist Israel. As citizens, despite being denied all rights and basic foundations of life and constantly forced to live in fear, the Palestinians continue to steadfastly defend their homeland and national dignity,” said Anwar.

He said Israel has murdered 24 100 innocent people since October 7, adding that Israel continues to be isolated by the international community.

South Africa filed the case at the Hague in December last year, accusing Israel of committing genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza and urging the ICJ to issue interim measures to protect the Palestinian people, including calling Israel to cease attacks.

It submitted strong evidence of Israel’s intent and actions of genocide that violate the Genocide Convention.
