Gweru (New Ziana) – A 28-year-old man allegedly murdered his girlfriend before hanging himself on the outskirts of Gweru, police have said.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the incident occurred at Lot 2 Wild Lock Farm, Gwenhoro Road, Gweru last Friday.

The 24 year old woman has been identified as Christabel Chigora of Anderson Adventist High School, Gweru. The man was identified as Alex Munatsi of Athlone.

The two were believed to be lovers.

Insp. Mahoko said Munatsi earlier in the day called his girlfriend’s mother, Christine Kumirai asking for Chigora to give her back her cell phone which he had confiscated following a dispute over infidelity.

Chigora left home at about 0900 hours.

The two were last seen alive while together in Gweru CBD aboard Munatsi’s Toyota Alteza vehicle.

Chigora’s body was discovered in the vehicle with scratches on the neck, and froth in the mouth.

A 5-litre container of termite poison was also found at the scene.

Insp. Mahoko said the boyfriend was found hanging from a tree about a kilometre away from the scene, and used a car seat belt to hang himself.

A report was made to the police who attended the scene and took the bodies to Gweru Provincial Mortuary.

Meanwhile, in another incident, police in Kwekwe are investigating an attempted murder case which occurred on 10 February at about 1100 hours at Wozoli business centre in Silobela.

Insp. Mahoko said a man was shot three times on the legs following a dispute over stolen gold ore.

The victim, Bekitemba Ndikinya, aged 20 from Mambume Village under Chief Malisa in Silobela, sustained gunshot wounds on both legs.

On the fateful day, it is alleged that the complainant and the suspect, Josiah Mazinyani, a male adult aged 28, were together at Wolozi business centre when the misunderstanding arose between them over some gold ore alleged to have been stolen from Arizona Mine in Gweru.
