Share

MARONDERA- As the rain season approaches, the Municipality of Marondera has
embarked on an extensive road rehabilitation exercise that will see roads, mostly in
residential areas, being re-gravelled, drain-lined, surfaced and culverted.
Works on some of the roads are funded by the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme
(ERRP) while others are being worked on using funds that the council sourced on its own.
The local authority’s public relations officer Kudakwashe Tapfumaneyi confirmed that
3.05kms of dusty roads will be surfaced with tar under the ERRP. The roads to be worked on
include Rukodzi Street in Dombotombo, Manyame Street in Cherutombo, Dimba Avenue in
Rujeko, Rusununguko Street in Nyameni, Field Way in Winston Park, Mwendamberi Way in
Cherutombo, Ruzawi West roads in Ruzawi and Shepparton roads in Shepparton.
In addition, some roads namely Second Street and Pine Street in the Central Business
District (CBD) will undergo some culverting.
“These road works are expected to be complete by the 30th of November this year. The
commuting public is urged to comply with the road works instructions pertaining to each
specific road to ensure the smooth flow of road rehabilitation operations during construction.
As council, we have issued a public notice on the planned road rehabilitation works to make
members of the public aware of the mentioned road works,” Tapfumaneyo said.
Roads to be rehabilitated under the ERRP facility will be financed to the tune of $1.27 biliion.
On the other hand, the municipality will work on a road stretch of 1km in Ruzawi West and a
road stretch of 4.8km in Shepparton using council’s internal funds.
Internal funds totalling US$1.5 million will be channelled to finance the Ruzawi West and
Shepparton road works.
“The rain season is upon us and the town’s drainage and sewer system will be exposed
further hence we have put remedies in place to contain potential damages to our roads.
During that period and beyond, we want all our roads to be trafficable to the general public.
“Council, under its department of engineering and works services regularly undertakes
routine maintenance such as drain opening, culvert clearance, verge clearing and lining of
drains in hotspot areas. These routine operations will ensure that Marondera’s drainage
infrastructure is able to cope with the onset and duration of the rain season,” the council’s
public relations officer added.
