MARONDERA- In line with the Call To Action: No Compromise To Service Delivery blueprint, the Municipality of Marondera has undertaken several projects and activities as it tries to deliver efficient services to residents and other ratepayers in the provincial capital.

The local authority embarked on a recapitalisation programme and acquired service delivery equipment worth thousands of dollars to improve service delivery in several areas such as emergency services, refuse collection, servicing of stands and other areas.

In an interview with Chaminuka, public relations officer Kudakwashe Tapfumaneyi said: “Council tarred several roads that include Ruzawi West (1 570 metres), Ruzawi West (2 400 metres), Rusununguko Avenue (340 metres), Manyame Crescent (400 metres), Mwendamberi Way (760 metres), Field Way (640 metres), Rukodzi Street (230 metres), Dimba Avenue (410 metres), Route 467 Chitepo Extension (520metres) and Route 469 Chitepo Exttension (210 metres).

“Our engineering department managed to construct 0.5km of road. We undertook road works that include gravel spot patching (25.64km), regravelling (2.44km) road grading (14.5km), drains opening (0.5km) and Verges clearing (0.8km). Council also Installed Magamba Cherutombo modular tanks which are now supplying 400 homes with potable water. This is expected to improve water access and increase revenue.” Tapfumaneyi added that the local authority is funding several housing projects that are running independently of the devolution projects.

These include the Chitepo Extension Housing Project which is valued at US$643 000, the Ruzawi West Housing Project valued at US$434 000 and the Shepparton Housing Project whose value is pegged at US$1.9 million. There is also the Lower Paradise Extension Housing Project which is valued at US$420 000 USD.

“These housing projects are the right tonic to address the housing waiting list and the accommodation challenges being experienced by the ever-growing population of Marondera. In all these projects, we are using our own financial resources,” he said.

According to Tapfumaneyi, the Municipality of Marondera is prioritising water and sanitation issues, with the top priority being the expansion of the water treatment plant expected to cost around US$12 million.

“Council is actively looking for investors to finance the project. This will see an increase in portable water supply from the current 13.5 mega litres per day to 30 mega litres per day. In the interim period, council is engaged in the phased rehabilitation of the water reticulation network to reduce no water zones within the reticulation network. We also plan to rehabilitate the sewer network to enhance wastewater collection from source to ponds,” he said.
