MDC-T suspends seven party heavyweights

Harare (New Ziana)-The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) led by Douglas Mwonzora on Tuesday suspended seven top officials for alleged gross misconduct.

In a statement, the party said the suspensions were with immediate effect and were to allow for investigations and disciplinary action.

Those suspended include former party vice president Elias Mudzuri, secretary for party business and projects Norest Marara, chairperson for Mashonaland West province Gift Konjana, chairperson Masvingo province John Nyika, chairperson for the USA province Den Moyo, secretary for education Edwin Dzambara and national executive member Edwin Kakora.

“These members are facing serious disciplinary charges and their suspensions are in terms of Clause 9.1.2.3 of the Party’s Constitution. The hearings will be conducted in terms of the MDC Constitution and their rights as accused persons will be respected,” the party said in a statement.

Some of the reasons for their suspension range from taking the party to court, organising violence at the recently held congress, colluding with forces hostile to the party, convening unsanctioned meetings, planning disturbances of the party ahead of the general elections and undermining the party’s internal democratic mechanisms in breach of the MDC-T constitution.

The MDC-T has been engulfed in internal strife since the death of founding leader Morgan Tsvangirai in 2018 with the wholesale recall of legislators and councillors being the major feature up to March last year.
