Harare (New Ziana) – The Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) has urged institutions in the country to support people with disabilities to access modern information communication technologies (ICTs) as various facets of society are now digitalized.

ZMC executive secretary Godwin Phiri made the call in a speech read on his behalf by public information compliance manager Brian Tomo during an Indaba to discuss access to ICTs by people with disabilities.

He said enabling legislations such as the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) are important to make sure that persons with disabilities can access information.

“The Freedom of Information Act plays a crucial role in promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance by empowering citizens to access information held by public entities.

“However, despite the significance of this legislation, there remains a lack of awareness and understanding among the general populace regarding their rights under the Act. This fora aims to address such an anomaly, as there is need for a clearer understanding of the Act by the populace,” he said.

Phiri applauded local Non-Governmental Organisation Signs of Hope for sharing with stakeholders key findings of research regarding the state of access to ICTs by people with disabilities.

“The Commission also presides over appeals by members of the public who are denied access to information by State entities and other public bodies as espoused by the Act.

“One of the tools that Signs of Hope is launching today, the Database of Community Information Centres in Zimbabwe, is a result of one such appeal. Congratulations to Signs of Hope for your success in your appeal and we hope to see the impact of the information going forward,” he said.

Senator representing persons with disabilities Annah Shiri emphasised the need to reaffirm commitment to creating an inclusive digital landscape by harnessing the power of technology as it can bridge the gaps that have hindered persons with disabilities participation in society.

“Access to ICT promotes inclusive education for persons with disabilities. Assistive devices and communication devices empower students with disabilities to access educational resources and participate actively in learning processes.

“There is a need for accessible websites and inclusive design policies to ensure equal access to ICT for all,” she said.

She added that access to ICT by persons with disabilities is a vital step toward building an inclusive digital society.
