THE Meteorological Services Department (MSD), in conjunction with the Department of Civil Protection, has warned of a cold, windy and wet spell expected to affect large parts of the country from Tuesday to Thursday.
In an advisory issued on Sunday, the MSD said temperatures were expected to drop during both the day and night, with cloudy conditions, strong winds and chances of light rain and drizzle in some areas.
The affected provinces include Matabeleland South, parts of Matabeleland North, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Midlands, Manicaland, Harare Metropolitan and Mashonaland East.
The weather system is expected to persist from August 11 to 13 as cool, moist south-easterly winds interact with a mid-level atmospheric system.
According to the MSD, southern and eastern parts of the country will experience generally cloudy, windy and cold conditions, with isolated light rain and drizzle possible in areas such as Chipinge, Chiredzi, Chimanimani and Nyanga.
“The public is advised to take necessary precautions against the cold, windy and wet conditions, particularly farmers and vulnerable groups,” said the department.
The MSD warned that strong winds could damage crops, plants and structures, cause soil erosion and expose livestock to stress and injuries.
Farmers have also been cautioned that rainfall during grain filling and maturity could reduce grain quality, while increased moisture may promote fungal diseases.
The department urged members of the public to dress warmly, including wearing hats, gloves and socks, and to limit exposure to the cold, particularly during early mornings and at night.
People were further encouraged to keep warm and hydrated by taking warm fluids and nutritious food.
Farmers have been advised to protect crops using mulching, row covers and windbreaks, while ensuring proper drainage and monitoring crops for diseases.
Livestock farmers should provide adequate shelter, bedding and feed, with particular attention to young animals that are more vulnerable to cold conditions.
The MSD urged communities to remain alert and take necessary precautions throughout the period, particularly farmers and other vulnerable groups.
