CHIVHU – A 33-year-old man will spend 15 years in prison for raping a 78-year-old woman in Mhondoro.
The perpetrator, from Mubaira in Mhondoro, was convicted and sentenced at the Chivhu Regional Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), on 26 August 2026 at around 7 pm, in Showani Village under Chief Rwizi in Mubaira, the perpetrator went to the victim’s homestead and forced his way into her room by kicking open a locked door.
Once inside, he grabbed the elderly woman, forced her onto her bed, and sexually abused her. The victim raised the alarm by screaming for help, which caused the perpetrator to flee the scene.
A member of the public heard her cries and came to her assistance. Together, they reported the incident to the police, leading to the perpetrator’s arrest and subsequent conviction.
Meanwhile, the NPAZ has condemned all forms of sexual violence, especially those committed against vulnerable members of society, and warned that offenders will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
