Harare, (New Ziana) – Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development has called on women to take charge of their lives and strive for independence.
This message was delivered by Ernest Chimboza, the Harare Metropolitan Provincial Development Officer in the Ministry, during the International Women’s Day commemorations held on April 9 at the Area A Community Centre in Mufakose.
Speaking to a gathering of women, Chimboza emphasized that women have the potential to excel and achieve their goals through creating job opportunities.
This push for independence is seen as a key strategy in combating gender-based violence (GBV) and oppression, which often stem from unequal power dynamics in relationships.
The theme of the program, “Accelerate for Development of Women and Girls”, is meant to promote gender equality and celebrating the strength and resilience of women and girls in community.
The event was organised by the city of Harare partnered by different stakeholders, including medical service providers who offered healthcare services, aimed at recognising the significant contribution of women in society and families.
Chimboza encouraged women to start projects that can generate revenue and improve their economic well-being. “By becoming entrepreneurs, women can break free from financial dependence on others and build a more secure future,” he said.
“Empowering women through entrepreneurship is crucial for their economic independence and a key step towards combating GBV.” Chimboza also urged women to take advantage of Empowerment Bank loans, which can provide the necessary funding to launch or grow their businesses. These loans can be a vital resource for women looking to become entrepreneurs.
“Access to funding is essential for women to turn their business ideas into reality and achieve financial independence.” Chimboza also emphasized the importance of women having their own bank accounts, which can help them manage their finances and make informed decisions about their money.
“Having a bank account is a fundamental step towards financial independence and a key aspect of economic empowerment for women,” added Chimboza.
The event was part of broader celebrations marking International Women’s Day globally, a day dedicated to recognizing women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements while advocating for gender equality.
