Mobile internet data usage increases throughout the country

Harare,  (New Ziana) –About 100 billion Megabytes of data were used throughout Zimbabwe from the first to the end of the fourth quarter of last year, a recent report on the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) index shows.

The Zimbabwe Statistics Agency (ZimStat) ICT index included the Postal and Courier Services statistics covering the first quarter to the fourth quarter of last year.

The two indices are economic indicators that measure short-term changes in the volume of ICT and Postal and Courier services over time, with a given reference period.

Construction of the indices is based on administrative data which the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) provides.

In compiling the ICT index, information on the voice traffic and active subscriptions for mobile internet and data services, fixed telephony services mobile telephony services was used.

For the Postal and Courier Services index, the survey included information on postal services (domestic letters) and courier services (domestic, incoming, and outgoing couriers).

“A total of 97 183 858 572 megabytes of mobile internet data were used countrywide during the fourth quarter of 2024, compared to 78 383 164 981 megabytes used in the preceding quarter.

Resultantly, the mobile internet and data traffic went up by 24.0 percent to 166.3, from 134.1 recorded in the third quarter of 2024 “Active internet and data subscriptions reached 12 493 098 in the fourth quarter of 2024, up from 12 275 147 in the third quarter of the same year.

Resultantly, the fourth quarter 2024 index rose from 106.3 recorded in the third quarter to 108.1, signifying a quarter-on-quarter percentage increase of 1.7,” the ZimStat said.

It added that active fixed telephone subscriptions increased from 295 056 in the third quarter to 298 047 in the fourth quarter, translating to an index of 102.4 when compared to 101.3 recorded in the third quarter, with the index’s quarter-on-quarter percentage change being +1.1.

During the fourth quarter, mobile network operators such as Econet, NetOne and Telecel recorded a total of 3 983 408 164 voice minutes, compared to the 2 809 620 065 recorded in the preceding quarter, leading to a quarter-on-quarter percentage increase of 41.7.
