Harare. (New Ziana)-As the Constitutional Amendment Bill number three debate continues in the National Assembly, more legislators are throwing their weight behind its provisions, particularly the extension of Zimbabwe’s electoral term from five to seven years.

The Parliamentarians also back the proposal which empowers them to vote in Parliament for Zimbabwe’s President.

In supporting the Bill, MP Margret Matienga said Zimbabwe should give legislators the responsibility to vote for the President because they represent their constituents.

“Many respected democracies select the Head of Government through the Parliament, ” she said while mentioning India and South Africa as some of the countries where Presidents are chosen by parliamentarians.

Midlands representative Variet Nhari said during public consultations, the province supported the Bill particularly the proposal to extend the electoral cycle from five to seven years.

MP for Mudzi West, Knowledge Kaitano said Mudzi constituents said lengthy electoral terms afford the government time to conclude ongoing developmental projects.

“The people of Mudzi have sent me to speak on their behalf that we should move to seven- year terms so that more time is afforded to enable completion of ongoing projects,” he said.

Nkulumani Member of Parliament Freedom Murefu said election of the President by Parliament reduces disputes and litigation.

Another opposition legislator said election of the President by parliamentarians eliminates political violence and preserves ongoing stability in the country.
