Kwekwe (New Ziana) -Close to 6 000 out of the 26 000 registered voters had cast their ballots by mid-morning on Wednesday in Kwekwe Central, the Midlands province.

Constituency elections officer Edmund Magaya said as of 10 AM, a total of 5 953 individuals had voted across the six wards in the constituency.

Magaya said the election process had been relatively smooth, with minimal challenges encountered.

She said 73 individuals were turned away for various reasons, including not having valid identification, attempting to vote in the wrong ward, or not appearing on the voters’ roll.

“We did face some issues at one polling station in Fitchlea, where officials are yet to provide their statistics. However, overall, the election process has been conducted without any major challenges.”

Zimbabweans were on Wednesday voting for a President, Members of Parliament and councillors to run their affairs for the next five years.

Polling was supposed to start at 7 AM and close at 7 PM but some polling stations opened late mainly due to late arrival of ballot papers.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has since said those polling stations that opened late would have their voting times extended by the length of time of the delay.
