Harare, (New Ziana) — Bulawayo’s main referral hospital, Mpilo, is set for major rehabilitation and refurbishment under the Presidential Hospitals Rehabilitation Programme meant to improve the country’s healthcare delivery system across the board.
The ambitious initiative, spearheaded by the government, seeks to revitalize key public hospitals across the country through facility upgrades, new medical equipment, and improved patient care.
At Mpilo Central Hospital, several major projects are already underway. The Renal Unit has received new state-of-the-art equipment, improving the hospital’s capacity to manage kidney-related illnesses, whilst work is progressing at the Tuberculosis (TB) Laboratory, which is nearing completion, and the modernised Paediatric Unit is set for handover in the coming weeks. In addition, plans are in motion to connect the hospital to a solar power system, ensuring reliable and sustainable energy supply to critical departments.
A total of $358 million has been allocated for the refurbishment of Mpilo Central Hospital, with $199 million already utilized. This substantial investment reflects the administration’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery and ensuring that citizens receive quality medical care closer to home.
The upgrades are expected to ease the burden on patients, particularly those from rural communities who have long been forced to travel to distant cities for specialized treatment.
Beyond infrastructure, the initiative represents a broader push toward equitable national development, ensuring that all regions benefit from modernized public services.
”This programme is a demonstration of our government’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable healthcare development,” the government said on its National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) X handle. ”Every Zimbabwean deserves access to quality medical care, regardless of where they live.”
As work continues at Mpilo Central Hospital, there is optimism that the facility will soon emerge as one of the region’s leading centres of medical excellence — a testament to Zimbabwe’s renewed focus on building a robust and inclusive healthcare system.
