MTSHABEZI High School does not only excel academically, but is equally at home
in music, as evidenced by their win at National Choral Music competition that were
held at Kutama College last week.
The Gwanda North school came out tops after battling for honours with 19 other
schools drawn from across the country.
The competition, which ran throughout the year was sponsored by ZERA.
For being the best school choir in the country, Mtshabezi High School walked away
with a floating trophy and prize money. The second best was Chipindura High from
Bindura in Mashonaland Central, while Nyazura Adventist School in Manicaland was
third.
Mtshabezi High School and Solusi Adventist in Figtree, which came out in ninth
position , represented Matabeleland South Province in this year’s competition, while
Tsholotsho High and Mosi a Tunya were the representatives for Matabeleland North
Province. They were placed eighth and 14th respectively.
Bulawayo was represented by Founders High School, which came out seventh.
The national president of the National Association of Secondary (Schools) Heads
(NASH), Arthur Maphosa, expressed gratitude for the winners’ performance.
“As NASH president, we are pleased for going through the competitions for the first
time since the scourge of Covid-19 that had put the competitions at hold.
“We could not do anything between 2020 and 2021 and even 2022 as we were still
recovering. However, we are very excited that our choirs are back on stage and
doing what they know best.
“Congratulations to the winners, Mtshabezi High School.”
He added that Mtshabezi High School have a reputation of being the best in
Matabeleland South and have been very competitive at the highest levels.
“Mtshabezi High School have always been fluctuating between position one, two and
three so, they have remained where they belong.
“Congratulations to the winners and all the choirs for making it to the national finals.
“Everyone is a winner. They are among the top 20 in the country out of a total of 3
060 secondary schools,” he said.
During the previous provincial competitions, Mtshabezi High from Gwanda North
shrugged of stiff competition to come out first for the second time in a row after
scoring 259 points under the set piece category, beating 13 other schools from
different districts.
