MASVINGO – Zimbabwe’s infrastructure modernisation drive reached another major milestone on Thursday with the official commissioning of the newly constructed state-of-the-art Mucheke River Bridge, a development expected to significantly improve traffic movement, road safety and regional trade along the country’s busiest transport corridor.

The bridge was officially commissioned by the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Felix Mhona, alongside senior government officials, with the development being hailed as another major achievement under the ongoing Harare–Masvingo–Beitbridge Highway Rehabilitation Project.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Minister Mhona said the completion of the bridge was a testament to Government’s unwavering commitment to delivering world-class infrastructure that drives national economic growth.

“The Mucheke River Bridge is not merely a physical structure connecting two points; it is a critical piece of infrastructure that strengthens Zimbabwe’s transport network, enhances road safety and facilitates the smooth movement of goods and people along one of the country’s most strategic economic corridors,” said Mhona.

He said the project demonstrates the Second Republic’s determination to modernise road infrastructure in line with Vision 2030.

“We are witnessing tangible progress under the leadership of President Emmerson Mnangagwa. This bridge is part of a broader national infrastructure transformation programme aimed at improving connectivity, reducing travel time and positioning Zimbabwe as a competitive regional trade hub,” he added.

Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Ezra Chadzamira also hailed the commissioning as a transformative milestone for the province.

“The commissioning of the Mucheke River Bridge is a landmark achievement for Masvingo Province and a clear demonstration of Government’s commitment to transforming infrastructure that directly impacts the lives of our people. This bridge will not only improve traffic flow and safety but will unlock greater economic opportunities for businesses, tourism and cross-border trade,” said Chadzamira.

He said the bridge further positions Masvingo as a strategic gateway for regional commerce and strengthens the province’s contribution to national development.

The Mucheke River Bridge forms a critical component of the Harare–Masvingo–Beitbridge Highway Rehabilitation Project, Zimbabwe’s strategic north-south trade artery linking the country to regional markets including South Africa, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The project is expected to eliminate longstanding traffic bottlenecks in Masvingo, particularly for heavy commercial vehicles travelling through the city, while significantly improving travel efficiency and safety for motorists.

Government officials described the bridge as more than just a transport facility, but a symbol of national progress, connectivity and economic empowerment.

The commissioning follows the recent opening of the Manyame River Bridge along the same highway as Government accelerates efforts to complete the broader rehabilitation project.

Reports indicate that over 540 kilometres of the Harare–Masvingo–Beitbridge Highway have already been completed, with the remaining sections expected to be finalised as Zimbabwe moves to fully modernise one of Southern Africa’s most critical transport corridors.

The Mucheke Bridge had previously experienced delays after technical assessments necessitated corrective works to ensure the structure met strict engineering and safety standards before opening to the public.

Its completion is being viewed as another significant milestone in the Second Republic’s infrastructure transformation agenda as Zimbabwe pushes towards achieving an empowered upper-middle-income economy by 2030.

For Masvingo residents and road users, the commissioning of the Mucheke River Bridge marks not only improved mobility but the dawn of a new era of development and enhanced connectivity for the province.
