Mudenda, Chinomona Re-Elected

Jacob Mudenda of the ruling Zanu PF was on Friday re-elected as Speaker of the National Assembly
for the Tenth Parliament of Zimbabwe after his nomination was not opposed.
Opposition Citizens Coalition for Change legislators did not participate in the election as they arrived
at the Parliament Building late from their party caucus.
The opposition party however said it had wanted its candidate, Bulawayo North Member of the
National Assembly member Minehle Gumede to be the Speaker.
Zanu PF retained Mudenda as its choice to continue in the role he has been playing since 2013.
Mudenda will be deputised by Tsitsi Gezi who was also not opposed for the post that she occupied in
the previous Parliament.
“I do hereby declare Honourable Advocate Jacob Mudenda duly elected to the office of the Speaker
of the National Assembly ,” said Clerk of Parliament, Kennedy Chokuda after the poll.
Later in the Senate, Marble Chinomona and General (Retired) Mike Nyambuya also retained their
posts of president and deputy after outpolling Felix Magalela Sibanda and Magie Chakabuda
respectively of the CCC.
Chinomona polled 50 votes to Sibanda’s 25 votes while Nyambuya garnered 49 votes against 16 for
Chakabuda.
After their re-election, Mudenda, Chinomona and their two deputies Gezi
and Nyambuya respectively went on to take oaths of office before Chief Justice Luke Malaba.
The election of the presiding officers for the Tenth Parliament followed the swearing of legislators
on Thursday.
