HARARE — Attention turns to the ZIFA Munhumutapa Challenge Cup this weekend as the inaugural competition enters its quarter-final stage following the international break. Eight teams are now just three victories away from lifting the prestigious trophy.
The last eight present an intriguing mix of Premier Soccer League heavyweights and ambitious lower-league challengers, setting the stage for another round of knockout drama when the competition resumes from October 2 to 4.
FC Hunters will face CAPS United in an all-Harare contest, while league champions Scottland FC have drawn Bulawayo Chiefs.
Hardrock FC will meet Herentals FC in another potentially tight encounter, while the remaining tie pits Blanket Mine FC against FC Platinum.
The quarter-final draw took place in Harare, conducted by veteran broadcaster Charles Mabika, with ZIFA president Nqobile Magwizi and general secretary Yvonne Mapika Manwa among the football administrators present.
The FC Hunters-CAPS United encounter is particularly interesting following Hunters’ impressive run in the competition and CAPS United’s continued pursuit of the lucrative prize.
CAPS United secured their quarter-final place by defeating Manica Diamonds 2-0 at Rufaro Stadium in the Round of 16, with Davison Marowa and substitute Junior Bunjira scoring.
The Green Machine now face another demanding assignment against FC Hunters, who have already demonstrated their ability to compete with established top-flight opposition.
Scottland, meanwhile, will face Bulawayo Chiefs as the newly crowned PSL champions continue their pursuit of another major trophy. The tournament has already produced several surprises, with the knockout stages demonstrating that reputation alone cannot guarantee progress.
Hardrock’s meeting with Herentals is another fascinating contest. Hardrock produced one of the most emphatic results of the Round of 16 when they defeated Jordan FC 5-1 at Luveve Stadium, while Herentals advanced after defeating Ngezi Platinum.
The final quarter-final pits Blanket Mine against FC Platinum, with the lower-league side continuing their remarkable cup journey. Blanket Mine reached the last eight after eliminating Triangle United on penalties in the Round of 16, while FC Platinum edged Blackrock 1-0.
The competition’s giant-killing theme has been one of its defining features since the national knockout phase began. Highlanders and Dynamos were among the notable casualties earlier in the tournament, with Blackrock eliminating Highlanders on penalties and Hwange knocking out Dynamos.
The quarter-final results will also determine the route to the final.
The winner of Blanket Mine versus FC Platinum will meet the winner of FC Hunters versus CAPS United in the first semi-final, while the victor between Hardrock and Herentals will face the winner of Scottland and Bulawayo Chiefs in the other semi-final.
The semi-finals are scheduled for December 5 and 6, before the tournament culminates with the final on December 22.
