Harare, (New Ziana) – The National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) is preparing for an exciting and action-packed Junior Championship Games, set to take place at the White City Stadium in Bulawayo on Saturday.
With over 1 000 young athletes from all 10 provinces expected to compete, this event promises to be a landmark occasion in Zimbabwe’s athletics calendar.
The championship serves as a critical qualifying event for the prestigious African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games in Windhoek, Namibia, giving aspiring athletes the opportunity to showcase their skills on a continental stage.
This year the competition is not just a race but a national mission to elevate Zimbabwean athletics to new heights, offering a platform for the next generation of Olympians.
“We’re thrilled with the incredible response we’ve received,” said Manuel Mpofu, the NAAZ Technical Director.
“The athletes, coaches, and provinces have shown immense enthusiasm, and the momentum is truly electrifying. We’re looking forward to one of the most memorable youth athletics events in recent years.”
The Junior Championship Games are expected to feature intense competition, with young athletes vying for spots in the Region 5 Youth Games.
For many of these participants, the event could be the springboard to larger international opportunities.
“This is where our future Olympians begin their journey,” Mpofu added.
“We want to see packed stands, roaring crowds, and athletes pushing themselves to their limits. It’s a chance for Zimbabwe to show its national pride.”
In addition to the exciting competition, the event will also honor the country’s athletic legacy by inviting legendary Zimbabwean athletes to attend.
These icons will serve as VIP guests, sharing their inspirational stories with the athletes and motivating them to strive for excellence.
“This isn’t just a sporting event – it’s a celebration of national unity, youth empowerment, and the spirit of excellence,” said Mpofu.
“Our legends have paved the path, and now it’s the next generation’s turn to carry the baton.”
The Junior Championship Games will be open to the public, with attendees encouraged to support the young athletes and cheer them on as they pursue their dreams.
