CHIREDZI -RESIDENTS in the Lowveld are concerned about the potential decline in participation both at corporate and community level during the monthly National Clean-Up campaign.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa in December 2019 declared the first Friday of each month as a national clean-up day. The exercise is aimed at promoting cleanliness and environmental responsibility throughout the nation.

It serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining clean surroundings and the role individuals, communities, and businesses play in achieving this goal.

However, concerns have emerged regarding a potential decline in participation from both the community and business sectors during recent clean-up exercises.

During the most recent clean-up exercise in Chiredzi, it was observed that several stakeholders were not present, raising concerns among the community.

Some residents worry that this absence may indicate a waning interest in the clean-up exercise, potentially undermining the Presidential Declaration.

Fanuel Moyo, a resident said: “The decline in participation during the clean-up exercise is disheartening. It is essential for both the community and the business sector to actively engage in keeping our environment clean. We must not underestimate the significance of the Presidential Declaration and the positive impact it can have on our society.”

However, it is important to note that the reasons behind the reduced participation may not solely be attributed to a lack of interest or disregard for the Presidential Declaration.

Susan Chikwava, a community leader, said the poor turn out called for stakeholder engagement.

“While it is concerning to witness lower participation, we must consider that there could be valid reasons for stakeholders’ absence. It might be beneficial to conduct a community survey or engage in dialogue with stakeholders to understand their concerns and assess what measures can be taken to encourage wider participation.”

The National Clean-Up Exercise remains a pivotal initiative in maintaining cleanliness and environmental sustainability. To ensure its ongoing success, it is imperative for all stakeholders, including the community and the business sector, to actively participate and reaffirm their dedication to the Presidential Declaration.
