Harare (New Ziana) – Mobile phone service provider, Net One said on Friday it had shut its shops as a precaution in most of the areas forecast to be hit by the impending tropical storm Freddy.
The storm, currently anchored in Mozambique, is expected to make landfall in several regions of the country on Friday evening.
In a notice to the public, Net One said it had shut down its shops on Friday in several areas, particularly in the Manicaland Province which is expected to bear the brunt of the storm.
Among areas affected by the shutdown are Mutare, Nyanga, Rusape, Chipinge and Checheche, all in Manicaland Province.
“Please be advised that in the interest of public safety, NetOne shops in Mutare, Chipinge, Checheche, Nyanga and Rusape will be closed today 24 February 20223,” Net One said.
It said the precaution was taken to protect both staff and customers.
Apart from Manicaland Province, the storm – which is forecast to be characterised by strong winds and heavy rains – is also expected to hit Masvingo, Harare Metropolitan, Mashonaland East and Mashonaland Central provinces.
The government has also taken a raft of precautionary measures to protect people and infrastructure, including ordering schools in all the five provinces to be shut on Friday, and setting up evacuation centres and search and rescue teams in all areas expected to be affected by the storm.
