Harare,  (New Ziana) — A new maternity theatre at United Bulawayo Hospital (UBH) has been hailed by the Government as a major milestone in Zimbabwe’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its public healthcare system, offering renewed hope to expectant mothers.

‎The state-of-the-art facility, commissioned under the government’s National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1), has already transformed maternal health services at UBH — one of the country’s busiest referral hospitals.

In a post on its National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) X handle, Government said with more than 300 Caesarean section deliveries being performed each month, the theatre is easing pressure on existing infrastructure while ensuring that mothers receive timely and quality medical attention.

Government has described the development as a “lifeline” for women in need of safe delivery services. Beyond meeting immediate healthcare needs, the theatre is also serving as a vital training ground for junior doctors.

Under the supervision of senior medical specialists, these young professionals are gaining hands-on surgical experience — a move expected to strengthen the country’s long-term healthcare capacity.

‎”The mentorship model we are using ensures that our young doctors acquire critical surgical skills while maintaining the highest standards of patient safety,” said one of the senior obstetricians at UBH. “It’s a win-win for both patients and the medical community.”

‎The new facility is part of the government’s broader initiative to modernize public hospitals and ensure equitable access to healthcare. In line with current policy, pregnant women, children under five, lactating mothers, and citizens aged 60 years and above are entitled to free healthcare in public institutions.

‎Officials from the Ministry of Health and Child Care say the investment reflects government’s ongoing commitment to improving health outcomes and reducing maternal mortality.

‎The improved infrastructure and expanded services at UBH are expected to significantly reduce maternal complications and improve delivery outcomes across Matabeleland and beyond.

‎As Zimbabwe continues to roll out its NDS1 goals, initiatives like the new maternity theatre stand as tangible proof of progress — offering not just modern facilities, but also renewed confidence in the nation’s public healthcare system.
