Beitbridge – A fire broke out at Mashavire vendor stalls in Beitbridge on Tuesday night destroying fresh produce and grocery stands and leaving small-scale traders counting heavy losses.
The affected area, known for its busy trade in vegetables and basic commodities, was engulfed in flames as vendors scrambled to save their goods.
Distressed traders expressed frustration over the incident. “This is where our daily bread comes from,” lamented one vendor. While salvaging what they could from the inferno, some feared that nearby power cables could catch fire, worsening the situation.
Amid the chaos, some residents reported suspected looting, with individuals allegedly taking groceries under the guise of helping move goods to safer areas.
Meanwhile, residents have raised fresh safety concerns, calling on authorities to install solar-powered tower lights at the Engen Garage bus stop. Community members say poor lighting has contributed to rising crime in the area and are urging swift intervention ahead of the Easter period.
