Nine suspected armed robbers nabbed in Harare

Share

Harare, (New Ziana)-The police in Harare on Tuesday arrested nine suspected armed robbers linked to a spate of robberies in the capital as well as Murehwa and Shamva areas in Mashonaland East province, since 2022.

The arrest led to the recovery of nine firearms which were used in the series of robberies.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told journalists that the suspects were also linked to an armed robbery where US$142 000 was stolen in Harare’s Eastlea suburb.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of nine suspects and the recovery of nine firearms. These suspects have been involved in robbery cases in Harare, Murehwa and Shamva. One of the cases includes the one which occurred at J & P Security offices in Eastlea in 2022 where over US$142 000 was stolen.

“The suspects are clearing five armed robbery cases initially but I want to assure Zimbabweans that as investigations continue, more cases in which these suspects were involved are going to be revealed,” he said.

Ass Comm Nyathi said the police would forge ahead in its fight against armed robberies in Zimbabwe.

“We want to thank the public for giving information to the police and also the work which has been done by police detectives in establishing leads in these armed robbery cases. There is no going back in the fight against armed robberies in the country,” he said.

Without confirming or denying reports that some of the suspects are serving members of the military, Ass Comm Nyathi said the police treats all armed robbery suspects the same.

“The position of the security services has been that anyone involved in criminal acts will be dealt with professionally,” he said.
