Mutare (Pungwe News-New Ziana)-A three month old baby from Nyazura, about 72 km north-west of Mutare in Manicaland province died recently when its mother fell off a scotch cart in which she was riding after it overturned, landing on her back.

Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Luxson Chananda said the scotch cart overturned after one of the oxen disengaged from the yoke.

Ass Insp Chananda said the mother of the child, Beatrice Bauren (28), was in the company of Enock Manwei (14) who was leading the cows.

“On approaching a steep slope, one of the oxen got off from the yoke and the cart overturned. Bauren was thrown out and she landed on her back. The deceased who was strapped on her mother`s back hit the ground,” he said.

A report was made to the police who attended the scene.

“No visible injuries where noticed and no foul play was suspected. The body was taken to Mutare Provincial Hospital mortuary for post mortem,” he added.

Ass Insp Chananda urged the public to be cautious and take security measures to avoid unnecessary loss of life.

In an unrelated incident, a 39 year old man from Chipinge in the same province died recently after downing a bottle of Gold Blend whisky which was not diluted.

Ass Insp Chananda said the late Phineas Moyana and his friend Fidas Mahori (49) were drinking undiluted Gold Blend whisky when he became too intoxicated to walk.

“He was later carried by Mahori in a wheelbarrow to his homestead,” he said.

The late Moyana was found dead by his brother Moses Moyana the next morning in his house and a report was made at Mahenye Police base, who attended the scene and took the body to St Peters Hospital for a post mortem.
