Harare, (New Ziana) — Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr Martin Rushwaya on Tuesday hailed President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s leadership, describing his journey from the struggles of the colonial era to the helm of Zimbabwe as an example of resilience, sacrifice and transformative leadership.
In a congratulatory message marking President Mnangagwa’s 84th birthday on Tuesday, Rushwaya said the President’s life had been characterised by struggle, service, commitment and an unwavering determination to advance Zimbabwe’s interests.
He said President Mnangagwa’s rise to the presidency was a testament to his ability to overcome adversity, including surviving the threat of execution during the colonial era.
“Your life exemplifies defiance of all manner of odds, including surviving the dire threat of execution by the colonial regime, to rise to the helm of our Nation,” Rushwaya said.
He said the Government and the nation were celebrating not only the President’s birthday, but also a life dedicated to Zimbabwe’s development and transformation.
Rushwaya said Zimbabwe had undergone significant transformation under President Mnangagwa’s leadership, moving from what he described as sanctions-related arrested growth and development towards a more prosperous and forward-looking economy.
“Under your leadership, Zimbabwe has transformed from sanctions-related arrested growth and development, into a dashing, prospering and forward-looking Nation which is poised to attain an Upper Middle-Income Status by 2030,” he said.
He attributed the progress to what he described as President Mnangagwa’s “able and far-sighted stewardship” and his capacity to galvanise Zimbabweans around the principle of self-driven development.
He said the President had inspired the country to reclaim its agency through the mantra “Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo”, emphasising the Government’s philosophy that Zimbabwe’s development must be driven by its own people.
“Today Zimbabwe baulks the Continent’s history of dependent development by charting a novel model and trajectory of self-driven growth and development based on her own endowments and effort,” Rushwaya said.
He further pledged the continued support of the Office of the President and Cabinet for President Mnangagwa’s programmes and initiatives aimed at achieving the country’s Vision 2030 objectives through the Second National Development Strategy (NDS2).
Rushwaya said the President’s office remained “staunchly and steadfastly” behind initiatives directed towards the attainment of an Upper Middle-Income Society by 2030.
