Over 1.5 million get Covid-19 booster shots

Harare (New Ziana) – More and more people are heeding government calls for vaccination against Covid-19, with a total of 30 106 receiving the third dose on Wednesday to bring the cumulative booster shots numbers to over 1.5 million nationwide.

On the same day, 21 056 received the first dose, bringing the cumulative total to 6 764 273, while 9 511 received the second dose to bring the tally to 5 038 007.

Zimbabwe is targeting to vaccinate 11.2 million people above 12 years, or 60 percent of the total population. So far, first dose coverage stands at 60.2 percent, second dose at 44.8 percent and third dose at 13.5 percent.

The government eased most of the Covid-19 restrictions that were imposed at the onset of pandemic after infection rates dropped, but still urged people to take precautions.

Lately, cases have been rising due to outbreaks of new Covid-19 variants in some parts of the world, forcing the government to renew calls for vigilance against the pandemic.

On Wednesday, out of 2 081 Covid-19 tests carried out, 59 turned positive, mainly from Manicaland province, 12, Mashonaland East, 10 and Harare, 9.

No deaths were recorded.
