Harare, (New Ziana) – The head of the Kaguvi Eye Unit, Boniface Macheka on Wednesday expressed gratitude to China for its assistance in the health sector for the country, saying this had contributed much to the welfare of Zimbabweans.
Speaking at Parirenyatwa Hospital where cataract screening and treatment was being offered to the public for free with assistance from China.
China is funding the treatment, which is expected to benefit more than 600 people, mostly the vulnerable.
Patients from as far as Chegutu, Kadoma, Kwekwe, and Shamva attended Wednesday’s clinic.
“The biggest screening is on Sunday and on Monday the 24th of February we will have surgery,” Macheka said.
But he said the demand for eye treatment was huge in the country, and more funding should be made available to enable more people to benefit.
“Six hundred people is such a small number, but it will contribute to some results . My hope is to help everyone and as long as we have funding nothing will stop us,” he said.
Macheka noted that the leading cause of cataract is age, with old age and injuries being significant contributing factors.
He urged the public to seek medical attention promptly, advising families not to neglect their elderly relatives and to bring them in for treatment before the condition worsens.
