Harare, (New Ziana) — Palestine on Thursday welcomed Zimbabwe’s election into the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2028 term, describing the achievement as a testament to the country’s growing stature and influence on the international stage.

Zimbabwe was overwhelmingly elected into the UNSC on Wednesday, placing it at the heart of international diplomacy alongside global giants such as Russia and China.

‎In a congratulatory message, Palestine ambassador to Zimbabwe, Tamer Almassri extended congratulations to the Government and people of Zimbabwe following the election.

‎”Ambassador Tamer almassri extends heartfelt congratulations to the Government and the people of the Republic of Zimbabwe on their successful election to the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2028 term.

‎This significant achievement, secured by an overwhelming mandate at the United Nations General Assembly, is a testament to the respect and confidence that the international community bestow upon Zimbabwe.

‎It stands as a clear recognition of Zimbabwe’s principled commitment to diplomacy, its advocacy for the sovereignty of nations, and its steadfast pursuit of a more equitable international order,” he said.

‎The Palestinian envoy expressed confidence that Zimbabwe will serve as a strong and influential voice for the Global South when it takes its seat in the Security Council.

‎He noted that Zimbabwe’s longstanding support for international law, protection of civilians and peaceful resolution of conflicts would make a valuable contribution to the Council’s work.

‎”At a time when the global architecture for peace is being tested, the presence of a nation that understands the value of peace, dialogue and non-interference is a vital contribution to the Security Council,” ambassador Almassri said.

‎He added that Palestine looked forward to witnessing Zimbabwe’s impact during its tenure and remained committed to strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations in pursuit of a more just and peaceful world.

‎Reaffirming the historic ties between Palestine and Zimbabwe, Ambassador Almassri highlighted the deep fraternal bond forged through a shared history of struggle for national liberation, self-determination and justice.

‎”We have stood together as partners in the pursuit of freedom, and we remain deeply appreciative of Zimbabwe’s unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people in our quest for an independent and sovereign state, with Jerusalem as its capital,” he said.

‎He also wished the Government of Zimbabwe continued success in its diplomatic endeavours and international engagements, expressing optimism that the country’s tenure on the Security Council would further advance peace, cooperation and multilateralism on the world stage.
