Harare, (New Ziana) – President of the Pan African Parliament Chief Fortune Charumbira has paid tribute to the late founding Namibian leader Dr Sam Nujoma, describing him as a champion of freedom, peace and unity across the African continent.
Dr Nujoma, who passed away on February 8 this year, will be laid to rest on Saturday in Windhoek, the Namibian capital.
Charumbira reflected on Dr Nujoma’s life, describing it as a testament to the unyielding pursuit of the greater good, driven by the conviction that the emancipation of one must be the liberation of all.
“His life was testament to the resilience of the human spirit, to the strength of unity, and to the relentless pursuit of justice and freedom.
“His rapid trajectory to the heights of global recognition, speaks to the profound qualities of transformational leadership,” he said.
He said Dr Nujoma has left a legacy which indelibly shaped not only the course of Namibian history, but the broader narrative of Africa’s liberation.
Charumbira highlighted the late leader’s heroic contributions to the independence struggles of Zimbabwe, Angola and South Africa, emphasizing that his impact extended far beyond the Namibian borders.
“I stand here today as President of the Pan African Parliament, precisely because President Nujoma’s legacy extends far beyond Namibia’s borders.
“His unrelenting commitment to the advancement of African unity was a cornerstone of his leadership, for he understood that the strength of a liberated Africa lay in its collective will and solidarity,” he said.
He also commended Dr Nujoma for his steadfast role as both a symbol and an active participant in the Pan-African movement during a time when many African countries were still grappling with the remnants of colonialism.
