POLITICAL parties and civil society organizations across Mashonaland Central Province have asked
the Government to institute a second round of the voter registration exercise, amid indications
many youths in the province are not registered voters.
ZANU PF Mashonaland Central Province vice chairperson, Magomo, said the problem was that the
voter registration team came ahead of the civil registry department’s exercise for issuing national
identity cards.
“Therefore, the registration exercise ended whilst some people were yet to get their identity cards,
meaning to say they then did not register to vote,” said Magomo.
Most of those who are not registered voters are youths.
The Civil Registry Department’s mobile identity registration programme across the country was
conducted between April and September this year and more than 3 million people got their national
identity documents, which will enable them to register to vote.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, about 4 million were issued identity
documents during the outreach programme.
The documents included birth certificates and death certificates, as well as national identity cards.
The Ministry had anticipated just two million during the exercise, but numbers ballooned.
All people, who received their IDs after the mobile voter registration mainly in farming communities
were unable to register to vote.
