Harare, (New Ziana) – Police have intensified nationwide security measures ahead of the Heroes’ Day and Defence Forces holidays next week, with Commissioner General Stephen Mutamba assuring the nation that comprehensive operations have been put in place to guarantee peaceful commemorations.
He warned criminals, drug traffickers and reckless motorists that they will face the full force of the law.
In a statement ahead of the holidays, Mutamba said police officers across the country had been directed to step up security deployments to ensure that all commemorative events proceed without incident.
“As the nation commemorates the 2026 Heroes’ Day and Defence Forces holidays, the Zimbabwe Republic Police reaffirms its unwavering commitment to ensuring that all commemorative activities across the country are conducted in a peaceful, safe, and secure environment,” he said.
He said all Officers Commanding Police Provinces had been instructed to implement comprehensive security arrangements at national, provincial and district commemorations, as well as other public gatherings.
“I have directed all Officers Commanding Police Provinces to implement comprehensive security measures at national, provincial, and district commemorations, as well as at other public gatherings,” he said.
The enhanced security plan will see increased police deployments, patrols, roadblocks, stop-and-search operations and surveillance activities throughout the holiday period to maintain law and order and deter criminal activity.
The Police Chief also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and avoid exposing themselves to crime by exercising caution during the holidays. He warned against unnecessary interactions with strangers, saying such encounters could leave people vulnerable to criminal acts.
Mutamba reaffirmed the police’s determination to combat drug and substance abuse, saying operations targeting drug manufacturers, suppliers, traffickers and street dealers would be intensified during the holiday period.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police remains resolute in its fight against crime, as well as drug and substance abuse. Operations targeting drug manufacturers, suppliers, traffickers, and peddlers will be enhanced,” he said.
He appealed to communities to support law enforcement efforts by reporting drug-related activities at the nearest police station.
Mutamba also issued a stern warning to motorists against drunk driving, revealing that police were now equipped with breathalyzer machines to detect intoxicated drivers.
“The Police are now equipped with breathalyzer machines, and all those suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol will be subjected to testing,” he said.
He encouraged the public to report all criminal activities to the nearest police officer, police station or through the National Complaints Desk to help maintain peace and security throughout the commemorative period.
