Harare, (New Ziana) – Police said on Saturday it had launched a nationwide operation targeting vehicles without proper registration, vowing to impound such vehicles until their registration was completed.
In a statement, police reminded motorists that operating an unregistered vehicle contravened the Vehicle Registration and Licensing Act (Chapter 13:14). The enforcement applies to all types of vehicles, including those owned by individuals, businesses, and government entities.
Authorities have also expressed concern over inconsistencies in vehicle ownership transfers, revealing that many cars change hands multiple times without the required legal procedures being followed.
“Investigations have uncovered cases where a single vehicle is sold to as many as five or seven different buyers while still being registered under the original owner,” read part of the statement.
Police warned that such irregularities complicate law enforcement, particularly when a vehicle is involved in traffic violations or criminal incidents, making it difficult to trace the accountable party.
As a result, officials have pledged to investigate and prosecute those found violating these regulations.
The ZRP has urged motorists to ensure timely registration and to complete ownership transfers within two weeks of purchasing a vehicle, as mandated by law.
“With immediate effect, any unregistered vehicle found in operation will be seized, and its release will only be granted upon full adherence to registration laws,” said the statement.
