Dancehall musician, Energy Chizanga, popularly known as Freeman, is helping police with investigations into criminal allegations linking him to armed robbery suspects, one of whom was shot in Harare recently, police said on Tuesday.
In a statement on X, police said the musician, (34), was interviewed by the Criminal Investigations Department’s Homicide section in connection with the criminal allegations.
Details of the interview are sketchy.
Chizanga has been linked to a number of shady characters in the past, but always escaped the scrutiny cleanly.
One such person was Godknows Machingura, (44) a robbery suspect believed to have been operating out of neighbouring South Africa and shot dead a fortnight ago in Harare together with Nabulani Ngobeni, (45), thought to be a South African citizen.
The two were allegedly part of a five-member gang that had travelled from the neighbouring country with the intention of committing robberies and kidnappings for ransom in Zimbabwe.
Other alleged members of the gang who escaped with injuries from the shootout are Ndlafhi Makado (39), Andrew Masubelele (38) and Emmanuel Makamo (22) and Paul Zhou.
