    Police nab Harare man over 2 000kg dagga

    Mutare (New Ziana)-A 52 -year old man from Epworth, just outside the capital, was recently arrested in Nyanga, Manicaland province, while trying to smuggle 26 bags of marijuana weighing 90 kg from Mozambique.

    The marijuana was smuggled through Kanyimo village under Chief Katerere in Ruwangwe Nyanga North.

    Police deputy provincial spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the incident, saying investigations were in progress and the suspect will appear in court soon.

    He said on August 24 at around 2330hrs, police received a tip off that Etherton Gondo (52) from Epworth was in Kaitano village to transport smuggled mbanje from Mozambique.

    Acting on the information, Ruwangwe police waylaid and ambushed Gondo who was driving a white/grey Toyota Hiace registration AEY 3194 and upon conducting a search they recovered dagga.

    “Police received information to the effect that the suspect was in Kanyimo village under Chief Katerere to transport mbanje which was being smuggled from Mozambique into the country.
    Police officers reacted swiftly and arrested the suspect while possession of the dagga,”said Asst Insp Chinyoka.

    He commended members of the public for working with the police in the fight against drug smuggling into the country.

    “As police, we commend members of the public for their cooperation with police in the fight against crime,” said the deputy police spokesperson.

    Cases of drug smuggling are on the surge in Manicaland province. Recently, two Zaka men were arrested after being found in possession of three bags of dagga weighing 20 kilogrammes in Chipinge district.

    The duo was arrested near Rimbi business centre in Chipinge. Their arrest follows a tip off they were going to purchase dagga near the Mozambican border.
