MVUMA – Police in the Midlands Province have recovered 279.38 kilograms of dagga after a Nissan NV350 kombi, allegedly carrying the illicit drugs, crashed while attempting to evade a police checkpoint along the Harare-Masvingo Road.
The incident occurred at about 3:40 a.m. on Saturday at the 188-kilometre peg, where police officers were conducting stop-and-search operations.
According to police, the kombi, registration number AGS 6929, was travelling towards Chivhu when its driver allegedly attempted to evade the checkpoint and crashed into a vehicle parked off the road.
The driver and an accomplice reportedly abandoned the vehicle and fled into the nearby bushes. A subsequent search of the Nissan NV350 led to the recovery of 17 bags containing dagga, which weighed 279.38 kg.
Both vehicles were damaged in the collision and were taken to ZRP Mvuma, while the recovered dagga and kombi are being held as exhibits.
Police have appealed to members of the public with information that could assist in identifying and locating the suspects to come forward.
This latest recovery comes amid intensified police operations against the trafficking of illicit drugs across the country.
The police operation was targeting dangerous drugs, armed robberies, stock theft, and wanted persons.
