Harare (New Ziana) – The newly elected Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, has stepped onto the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, waving to the jubilant crowd before delivering his first Papal blessing. The announcement of “Habemus Papam” was met with cheers, marking the beginning of his leadership of the Catholic Church.
The conclave, which began on May 7, saw 133 cardinal-electors cast their votes in secrecy. After multiple rounds, the required two-thirds majority was reached, leading to the selection of the 267th pope in history. Pope Leo XIV is the first American Pontiff.
He takes over from Pope Francis who died on Easter Monday after leading the church for 12 years.
In his first address, Pope Leo XIV expressed gratitude and called for unity, peace, and compassion.
“Brothers and sisters, I stand before you humbled by this great responsibility. Together, we shall walk in faith, embracing the love and mercy that Christ has shown us.”
“The world faces many trials—conflict, inequality, and suffering. As the Church, we must be a beacon of hope, standing with the marginalised and working for justice.”
“I pledge to continue the mission of the Church, fostering dialogue, understanding, and unwavering commitment to the Gospel.”
The crowd erupted as Pope Leo XIV blessed them and offered his Urbi et Orbi (to the city (of Rome) and to the world.” It is a solemn papal blessing delivered by the pope on significant occasions, including Easter, Christmas, and upon the election of a new pope) message to the world. His election follows the passing of Pope Francis, who modernised the Church and championed social justice.
Pope Leo XIV is expected to outline his vision for the Church in the coming days, addressing key issues such as interfaith dialogue, humanitarian efforts, and the future of Catholic doctrine. His official inauguration will take place in a grand ceremony at St. Peter’s Basilica.
