Portugal’s quest for a first FIFA World Cup title came to a heartbreaking end after a narrow defeat to Spain in the Round of 16, bringing the international World Cup journey of captain Cristiano Ronaldo to a close.
The 41-year-old Portuguese icon, who had already announced that the 2026 tournament would be his last World Cup, was unable to inspire his side to victory as Spain secured a 1-0 win to advance to the quarter-finals.
The defeat means Ronaldo will retire from World Cup football without lifting the coveted trophy despite enjoying one of the most decorated careers in the history of the sport.
Widely regarded as one of football’s greatest players, Ronaldo leaves the World Cup stage with numerous records, including becoming the first player to score in six different FIFA World Cups. During the 2026 tournament, he added three goals to his tally and also became the oldest player to score in a World Cup knockout match.
Speaking before Portugal’s clash with Spain, Ronaldo had confirmed that this would be his final World Cup, saying he wanted to enjoy every moment and hoped the Spain match would not be his last.
Although the elusive World Cup title will remain absent from his glittering collection, Ronaldo’s legacy remains firmly intact. His career includes multiple league titles across England, Spain and Italy, five UEFA Champions League crowns, the UEFA European Championship title with Portugal in 2016, and the UEFA Nations League.
As Portugal bow out of the tournament, attention now shifts to the next generation of Portuguese stars tasked with ending the nation’s long wait for football’s biggest prize, while Ronaldo exits the World Cup stage as one of the game’s most influential and celebrated figures.
