Harare-President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared the fatal Deka Bridge road accident in Hwange a State of Disaster following the death of eight people on Saturday.
The declaration was announced by Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe, who said the move will enable Government to mobilise urgent assistance and support for the bereaved families and injured victims. The tragic accident occurred when a Toyota Noah with 14 passengers, including the driver, veered off the road and plunged into Deka Bridge.
Eight people died on the spot, while six others sustained injuries. The passengers were returning from an all-night church service held at St John’s Makwa Roman Catholic Church and were travelling to Victoria Falls when the accident happened. Minister Garwe said the declaration of the accident as a State of Disaster underscores Government’s commitment to supporting affected families during difficult times.
