Harare, (New Ziana) — President and First Secretary of the ruling ZANU PF party, President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, has appointed General (Rtd) Philip Valerio Sibanda to the party’s Politburo wing with immediate effect.
The appointment was confirmed by the party’s Department of Information and Publicity, which said the move was made in terms of Article 9, Section 65 read together with Section 67 of the party constitution.
“The President and First Secretary of ZANU PF, Cde Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, has appointed General (Rtd) Philip Valerio Sibanda to the ZANU PF Politburo with immediate effect,” it said.
The ruling party said the appointment reflects the leadership’s continued confidence in retired general Sibanda’s experience and contribution to national development.
General Sibanda, a former Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, is one of the country’s most senior military figures and has played a significant role in the country’s security establishment over several decades.
The Politburo oversees the implementation of party policies and resolutions and advises the President and First Secretary on governance, mobilisation and administrative matters.
General Sibanda retired from active military service in 2025 after serving as Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces since 2017, succeeding Vice President Constantino Chiwenga following his transition into politics.
