Harare (New Ziana) – President Emerson Mnangagwa is in Lusaka, Zambia for the funeral service of Zambia’s founding President Dr Kenneth Kaunda.

President Mnangagwa, who left Harare on Friday morning, joins several Heads of State from the Southern African region and beyond in mourning one of Africa’s most iconic political figures.

“On behalf of the people and government of the Republic of Zimbabwe and indeed on my own behalf, I wish to express my deep grief and sad condolences on the passing on of the last standing father of the OAU and also the founding father of the Republic of Zambia.

“Indeed Dr Kenneth David Kaunda is the last Frontline states President who has seen all the Southern African states become independent. He was the Pan-Africanist icon who believed that Zambia was not independent until all countries on the African continent have become free and independent. Rest in eternal peace founder and champion of African freedom, ” President Mnangagwa wrote in the book of condolences upon arrival in Lusaka.

Dr Kaunda, affectionately known as KK, died aged 97 on June 17 at a Lusaka hospital where he had been admitted.

Upon his death, Zambia immediately declared 21 days of National mourning.

President Mnangagwa also declared 14 days of mourning in Zimbabwe in honour of Kaunda.

According to the official funeral programme, KK will be buried on July 7 at the Presidential burial site in Lusaka.
