Harare (New Ziana)-President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Friday applauded the country’s health personnel for their work which ensured that one million Zimbabweans receive their Covid-19 shots.
On Thursday, Zimbabwe breached the 1 million mark for those who have received the first Covid-19 jab.

The country commenced its vaccination exercise early this year, initially prioritising frontline workers only.

But because the exercise has now been opened to everyone, coupled with a resurging wave of infections, vaccine demand has spiked resulting in long queues at various vaccination centres.

In light of this, Government roped in additional personnel from the security services sector to boost manpower involved in the COVID-19 vaccination programme.

In a celebratory post on his Twitter account, President Mnangagwa said Zimbabweans who had been vaccinated against Covid-19 were true ‘heroes’.

“One million Zimbabweans have now received their first COVID-19 jab! Thank you to all the doctors, nurses and health officials who have made this possible.

“You are true Zimbabwean heroes,” said President Mnangagwa.

Finance and Economic Development Minister Prof Mthuli Ncube also applauded the health workers for their efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“One million Zimbabweans have now received their first COVID-19 jab! Thank you to all the doctors, nurses and health officials who have made this possible. Saving lives and livelihoods: vaccination program is part of Zimbabwe’s economic recovery strategy,” tweeted Prof Ncube.

Zimbabwe has witnessed a spike in new cases as the Delta variant, which originated in India, continues to wreak havoc across the world.

The country has 26 680 active cases of Covid-19.
