Harare, (New Ziana – President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Friday commissioned the newly refurbished Adlam House and Nurses Home at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, describing the project as a major step towards strengthening Zimbabwe’s healthcare delivery system and improving the welfare of health professionals.

The commissioning ceremony marked another milestone under the Government’s nationwide hospital modernisation programme being implemented under Vision 2030.

President Mnangagwa said the transformation of the facilities demonstrated the success of Zimbabwe’s development philosophy centred on self-reliance, unity and local participation in national projects.

“Today’s event and the beautifully refurbished infrastructure before us is another confirmation of the success of our development philosophy, ‘Nyika inovakwa, inotongwa, inonamatirwa nevene vayo’. We are further celebrating unity, hard work and the shared national determination to transform and modernise every sector of the economy ourselves,” he said.

He said Government was prioritising the modernisation of the health sector through infrastructure rehabilitation, human capital development and improved service delivery systems.

President Mnangagwa said the refurbished facilities complemented broader national efforts to build an upper middle-income economy anchored on a healthy and productive population.

He commended the cooperation between Government, the private sector and development partners in delivering the project, saying the achievement reflected the effectiveness of the Whole-of-Society Approach.

“The transformation we have seen here has been realised under the Whole-of-Society Approach, that is, the public, private sector and general citizenry working hand-in-hand to build our great motherland, Zimbabwe,” he said.

He applauded the use of local materials and expertise in refurbishing the infrastructure, urging Zimbabweans to continue supporting domestic industries and local innovation.

“It is also commendable that this exceptional and indeed breathtaking makeover here at Parirenyatwa Hospital was achieved through the use of our own local resources. This is how it ought to be,” he said.

President Mnangagwa said Government was recording notable progress towards achieving universal health coverage, adding that maternal mortality rates were declining while life expectancy was improving due to ongoing interventions in the health sector.

He said modern digitally-enabled medical equipment was being installed across health centres nationwide to improve diagnosis and treatment efficiency.

“Our air ambulance system is scoring great milestones with over 2 000 evacuations conducted to date, supported by strategically located bases across the country. No one and no place is being left behind,” he said.

He said the Presidential Hospital Renovation Programme was progressing steadily across the country, with ongoing works at Mpilo Hospital, Sally Mugabe Hospital and Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.

He also expressed satisfaction with the refurbishment of Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Hospital, saying women deserved dignified, safe and comfortable healthcare facilities regardless of where they lived.

President Mnangagwa said human capital development remained central to Zimbabwe’s socio-economic transformation, adding that Government established the Health Services Commission to strengthen training, retention and motivation of healthcare workers.

“Student nurse training and medical education are critical pillars of our health system. Nurse trainees, along with doctors and all other health care personnel being trained throughout institutions of higher learning, are the backbone of the health delivery system of tomorrow,” he said.

He urged trainee nurses and healthcare professionals to remain disciplined, dedicated and patriotic as they prepared to serve communities across the country.

“The improvements and in some cases complete overhaul of the student accommodation and welfare facilities here at Parirenyatwa is a glimpse of the environment which I, as your President, desire for you, our young professionals,” he said.

He reiterated Government’s commitment to continuously engage healthcare workers and improve their conditions of service while ensuring uninterrupted health services for citizens.

He said the commissioning of Adlam House and the Nurses Home was not the end of the journey, but another important milestone in building a modern, efficient and resilient health system for Zimbabwe.
