MVURWI — President Emmerson Mnangagwa today commissioned the Munhumutapa Youth Housing Project in Mvurwi, Mashonaland Central Province, marking a major step towards expanding access to home ownership among young Zimbabweans.
The project, unveiled during this year’s Munhumutapa Day commemorations, will begin with 300 residential stands for youths in Mashonaland Central before being expanded to other parts of the country.
The programme will see 2,000 youths allocated residential stands on 59 hectares in Mvurwi, as well as 100 hectares at Kimcourt in Centenary and another 100 hectares in Bindura.
The initiative is part of the Government’s broader youth empowerment agenda, which seeks to equip young people with resources and opportunities to build sustainable livelihoods and contribute to national development.
President Mnangagwa, who was in Mvurwi for the commemorations, said the housing initiative is among the measures being pursued to ensure youths benefit directly from national development programmes.
The project adds housing to the growing range of youth empowerment initiatives, providing young people with opportunities to secure residential stands and build homes while creating long-term household assets.
The commissioning also added a practical development dimension to Munhumutapa Day, which aims to celebrate Zimbabwe’s historical heritage while inspiring citizens to draw lessons from the past to build the nation.
Thousands of youths gathered in Mvurwi for the commemorations, which coincided with President Mnangagwa’s 84th birthday.
The first 300 stands are expected to lay the foundation for a broader youth housing programme, with the Government seeking to extend access to residential land for young people in other provinces.
The initiative comes as the Government continues to pursue policies aimed at broadening economic opportunities for youths and ensuring that development benefits reach communities across the country.
The housing project also aligns with the national development thrust towards inclusive growth and the attainment of Vision 2030, under which youths remain a key constituency in Zimbabwe’s socio-economic transformation.
Through initiatives such as the Munhumutapa Youth Housing Project, the Government seeks to turn youth empowerment from policy commitments into tangible opportunities that enable young people to own assets, establish homes, and participate actively in the development of their communities.
