President Mnangagwa lauds unceasing Chinese solidarity

Harare, (New Ziana) – President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Thursday lauded the Chinese government for its unceasing support and solidarity with Zimbabwe during its times of need and especially on international fora when the country comes under hostile western spotlight.

The Head of State said this during a virtual meeting with Chinese ambassador to Zimbabwe, Guo Shaochun during which the Zimbabwean leader received a donation of 120 computers to be distributed to local schools.

“We continue to enjoy the support of the Peoples Republic of China at all international forums where the subject of Zimbabwe is discussed. You have stood by us at the fora and we are grateful for that brotherly solidarity and support which you have given us and we shall also continue to support the thrust and non-interference policy of the Republic of China whether it be on our continent or internationally. We support you on the thrust for multilateralism against the pursuit of narrow interests by big powers of the first world,” President Mnangagwa said.

Always on the receiving end of Western criticism especially after it carried out the historical land redistribution programme, Zimbabwe has been defended and saved from punishments including possible United Nations sanctions by China and other friendly countries.

President Mnangagwa said China continued to give support to various segments of the Zimbabwean economy from health, power, airports, education and agriculture as well as various construction projects.

Most recently, Beijing was among the top donors to the country in support of efforts to fight and mitigate against the spread of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic.

“Most importantly when we had nothing, we felt China was indeed a great friend because you came to our rescue at a time when we were most exposed through lack of this equipment,” he said.

Zimbabwe, he said, had gradually re-opened its economy, which had been shut down to minimise spread of Covid-19, with financial support being given to local industries most affected by the closure to rejuvenate operations.

Ambassador Guo also lauded Zimbabwe for its support to China as the Asia country battled the outbreak of the coronavirus.

He said the two countries continued to receive unwarranted criticism on different matters on the international front.

If the Covid-19 vaccine that it was developing was successful, he said, China would ensure it was accessible and affordable to countries like Zimbabwe.
