Mvurwi, (New Ziana) — President Emmerson Mnangagwa was expected on Tuesday to lead thousands of Zimbabweans in commemorating Munhumutapa Day in Mvurwi, Mashonaland Central, in an event that coincides with his 84th birthday.
The celebrations, organised by the ZANU PF Youth League, will bring the usually quiet farming town to life as party supporters and youths from across the country gather to mark the national day dedicated to Zimbabwe’s ancient heritage.
President Mnangagwa, who is also ZANU PF First Secretary, was born on September 15, 1942, making Tuesday’s celebrations both a national and birthday commemoration.
Munhumutapa Day is rooted in Zimbabwe’s pre-colonial history and seeks to recognise the legacy of the Mutapa State, one of the most influential political and economic kingdoms to emerge in the region.
The Mutapa dynasty developed from the civilisation associated with Great Zimbabwe and at its height controlled extensive territories in present-day Zimbabwe and parts of neighbouring countries.
The kingdom became an important centre of trade, with gold, ivory and other commodities moving through regional and international trading networks. Its history provides evidence of sophisticated systems of political organisation, commerce and social development that existed in the region long before colonial rule.
The establishment of Munhumutapa Day has therefore provided Zimbabwe with an annual occasion to place its pre-colonial history and indigenous achievements at the centre of national consciousness.
This year’s commemoration in Mvurwi also gives prominence to young people, with the ZANU PF Youth League positioning the event as a platform for encouraging the younger generation to learn about the country’s history while participating in its development.
The celebrations are taking place at a time when the Government is pursuing its Vision 2030 development agenda, with youths being viewed as key participants in economic transformation.
Mvurwi, an important agricultural centre in Mashonaland Central, is expected to experience an unusual surge in activity as visitors converge on the town for the event.
The celebrations are expected to feature speeches and activities highlighting Zimbabwe’s cultural heritage, national development and the role of young people in shaping the country’s future.
For President Mnangagwa, the occasion provides a unique intersection between national history and a personal milestone, as he marks his 84th birthday while presiding over an event celebrating one of the region’s most powerful pre-colonial dynasties.
The Munhumutapa celebrations are consequently expected to go beyond the day’s festivities, with organisers seeking to use the occasion to strengthen appreciation of Zimbabwe’s history and promote a sense of national identity among the country’s younger generation.
