The nominees include Zanu PF Bulawayo provincial chairperson and war veterans leader Jabulani Sibanda, former Mashonaland West Minister of State Mary Mliswa, former Manicalnd Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Nokuthula Matsikenyere, businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei, Zanu PF Harare province chairperson Godwills Masimirembwa, Lucy Chitaga, retired Major-General Gibson Mashingaidze, Makhosini Hlongwane, Brilliant Dube and Irene Mutumba.
“After consultation with the National Assembly, I have to inform the House that His Excellency, the President, is desirous of appointing the following as Senators,” Mudenda said.
The recently gazetted Constitutional Amendment Act Number three provides for the President to appoint non-constituency Senators.
The 10 nominees will now proceed to the required Parliamentary processes before assuming office.
Other notable provisions of the amendment include abolishing direct presidential elections, replacing them with a vote by Parliament while also extending Presidential, Parliamentary and local authority terms from the current five to seven years.
