President Mnangagwa rallies support for COVID-19 fight

Harare (New Ziana) – President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Monday rallied Zimbabweans to unite in the fight against COVID-19, highlighting that the battle against the pandemic could only be won through concerted efforts against the deadly virus.

He said this in an appreciation tweet for support in the fight against Covid-19 offered by various local companies to the government last week.

“The fight against COVID-19 is a national struggle and we must all come together to defeat it,” he tweeted.

“Thank you to Sakunda Holdings, West Property, CBZ and other businesses for your contribution to the vaccine fund.”

President Mnangagwa was referring to various donations, including cash, availed by the companies to the government last week for the fight against COVID-19.

For example, fuel concern Sakunda donated $170 million towards the procurement of vaccines, medical sundries for rural hospitals and 300 000 litres of fuel.

President Mnangagwa’s call comes as the country reached the one million milestone last Friday of people who have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

Zimbabwe commenced its vaccination exercise early this year, initially prioritising frontline workers only.

But because the exercise has now been opened to everyone, coupled with a resurgence in infections, vaccine demand has spiked resulting in long queues at various vaccination centres.

Zimbabwe has witnessed a spike in new cases as the Delta variant, which originated in India, continues to wreak havoc across the world.
